Month 8

FOCUS : MENTAL HEALTH (PT. 2)

This month completes the conversation around mental health. This part focuses on mental health in our society. Stigma is still a huge reason that many people still don’t get the help they need. Start a conversation in the workplace about ways to support each other and the community. The email this month outlines some ways to do this.

In addition to sending out the monthly email, use the weekly messages to engage employees. Continue to host on-site volunteer opportunities for your employees. Along the way, make sure you are using social media platforms to promote your volunteer events.

[Greeting],

This month will be the second month focused on mental wellness. Last time we looked at how to take care of mental health on a personal level. This month we are looking at mental health as a broader topic and how it is viewed in our society. Most of us understand that mental health is a somewhat taboo subject. There are parts of the world that are more open to discussion than others; however, there is still a stigma that surrounds mental health no matter where you are. Part of this stigma comes from myths and false facts that are spread about mental illness. This creates the perception that people with mental illness are dangerous or that their illness is something they can just “get over”. Myths such as these make it difficult for those who want treatment to seek it out. As we’ve mentioned in previous emails, 1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental illness in their life. What’s shocking is that 66% of those with a diagnosable mental illness do not seek treatment. There are many reasons that people don’t seek treatment, but stigma is one of the most prevalent. It’s important to help end some of the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Here are just a few ways you can make an impact on mental wellness. Educate Yourself: learn about ways mental health concerns affect everyone or educate yourself on various mental illness from people with those disorders, doctors, or educators. Speak Out: If you are living with a mental illness, tell your story. Sharing experiences lets others know that they are not alone and gives a face to these concerns. Donate/ Volunteer: Find organizations that support people with mental illness and give your time or dollars.
